Scientific Name: Ulmus americana

The first thing you need to look for when identifying ash is the opposite branching. It is pictured with the arrows below. If a tree has opposite branching, then it is likely a Maple, Ash, Dogwood, or Buckeye. Remember MAD-Buck.

Next, the bark has one of two types of pattern. It can have an "X" pattern to the bark, or more of an alligator skin look. Both bark patterns are pictured below.
